The Seoul Sunday, Gritty City Shootout

This upcoming Sunday will be the first in a series of begin for “shootouts” that will take place in unusual parts of the city that usually go ignored or unknown by many photographers and artists. The goal of these shootouts is multi-fold, in that we hope to provide a form in which models can express themselves and get good shots to bolster their portfolios, while the photographers do the same. On the photography front, these shoot outs will provide enough structure to allow photographers a means to improve their technical skills, but obviously enough freedom to express themselves the way they want. The main photographers organizing the event are Antonio Martin and Michael Hurt, both of whom are experienced photographers who have run their own studios in Seoul, and are experienced in doing commercial work for clients. Both Antonio and Michael choose sites that are off the beaten path and therefore push photographers to think outside their comfortable, aesthetic boxes since the paths on these days are often not pretty, nor are their charms often immediately obvious.

Another one of the functions of these event is quietly educational. One of the philosophies underlying these photographic outings comes from the obscure field of psychogeography, which would engage in the derivé, or an unplanned journey through an urban landscape in which the wanderer can learn about the space, the city, and even the society by direct, embodied interaction with and within the space. In our particular case, our journey is not so unplanned as to be wandering around random parts of the city. We are choosing certain sites because they are photogenic in certain ways and can lead to new photographic and artistic conclusions. So, our pre-chosen sites provide some structure, yet in that they are usually unknown to the people coming to the event to shoot, there is a lot to discover.

Also, both Antonio and Michael have their own plans for shooting within the space, which other photographers can choose to participate in or follow, or completely ignore. But that experience in shooting and in executing editorial concepts will be there for other photographers to draw upon. This is another level of structure that can inform your photography and modeling and your final product. It's there for you to draw upon, but it's also free for you to ignore.

Our main site for the shoot-out on Sunday will be the electronics market in Yongsan, which has long been an industrial/commercial area that has been quite obviously known for its electronics market. It's not a place generally thought of as one conducive to making pretty pictures, but this particular kind of shoot is going to be something different altogether. Rather than simply gathering a group of people in a place and encouraging people to shoot their own, random things inside what would ostensibly be a pretty space like a park, riverside, or another usual, photographic suspect, we've decided to shoot in a place that most people don't think of as a place to shoot, but is actually quite dense with photographable backdrops, especially if you use creative composition and light things creatively. We will be leading your journey through this space by example, and we will also be open to changing things up and discovering new things on the fly, so it should be quite a dynamic day of shooting.

One of the larger aesthetics expected within the shoot is that of the current Korean cultural trend of twe-pe-mi (퇴폐미), or a kind of “grungy chic.” Of course, you can shoot or pose in whatever ways you want, but this is going to be one of the aesthetic assumptions of our photographic derivé that day, and informs our reason for going to that area in the first place.

Antonio Martin is a Seoul based photographer who uses the street as his personal studio and totally enjoys using unique, gritty and fun locations.

안토니오 마틴은 서울에 기반을 둔 사진작가로, 거리를 개인 스튜디오로 사용하고 독특하고, 투박하고, 재미있는 장소들을 사용하는 것을 전적으로 즐깁니다.

Dr. Michael W. Hurt is a Visual Sociologist based in Seoul as a photographer, consultant, and itinerant professor. He was also Korea’s first professional street fashion photographer and blogger, shooting in that genre from 2006, after having started pure street photography in Seoul from 2002.

마이클 W 허트 박사는는 사진작가, 컨설턴트, 순회 교수로 서울에 기반을 둔 시각 사회학자입니다. 그는 또한 2002년부터 서울에서 순수한 거리 사진을 시작한 후, 2006년부터 그 장르를 촬영하면서 한국 최초의 전문 거리 패션 사진가이자 블로거였습니다.
