Dr. Michael W. Hurt is a visual sociologist, photographer, and professor based in Seoul, holding a PhD in Comparative Ethnic Studies from UC Berkeley and teaching Cultural Theory and Art History at the Korea National University of the Arts (K-Arts). He launched Korea's first street fashion blog in 2006, was featured by Yonhap News as one of Korea's original YouTubers at the launch of YouTube Korea in 2008, published the first English-language book on Korean fashion in 2009, and has held press credentials at Seoul Fashion Week since 2007 — 37 total seasons, missing only for COVID cancellations and one hospitalization. His academic research centers on Photo-Sartorial Elicitation (PSE), a methodology he developed that uses clothing as ethnographic instrument and the camera as documentation tool to capture what conventional research misses: Korean cultural transmission operating through kinesthetic empathy, through bodies learning from bodies, leaving no digital trace. That fieldwork now spans South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines, tracking how Korean aesthetics function as cultural translation and positioning Korea not as a content exporter but as a global cultural DJ — a curatorial superpower that shifts originals without claiming authorship. He also shoots neighborhood portrait sessions for travelers through Photo Trips, which keeps him sharp and plugged into who's actually coming to Korea and what's drawing them here. He is Founder and Director of KARSI (Korean Advanced Research & Studies Institute) and has served as cultural consultant to Google, Meta, Pinterest, and P&G.
